Ford wil streaming audio in de auto

In Amerika voorziet Ford veel auto’s van het SYNC-systeem. Het is een entertainment- en communicatiesysteem dat wordt ontwikkeld door Microsoft. Op 26 mei zal Ford een update voor SYNC uitbrengen met verkeersinformatie, routeaanwijzingen en de mogelijkheid om informatie van internet op te halen via een smartphone met Bluetooth, schrijft Autoblog.com. Dat laatste is handig voor het weerbericht, sportscores, et cetera.

SYNC wordt om de paar maanden voorzien van nieuwe diensten. Een interessante optie die Ford onderzoekt is het aanbieden van streaming audio. Zo is Ford in gesprek met het in Amerika populaire Pandora, een soort persoonlijk radiostation dat is afgestemd op de individuele muzieksmaak. Helaas is dit alles alleen voor Amerikanen beschikbaar, maar ongetwijfeld krijgen we dergelijke systemen ook in ons land. Een voorproefje in onderstaande video.

Ruzie tussen TomTom en Microsoft loopt met een sisser af

De patentenruzie tussen Microsoft en TomTom lijkt met een sisser te zijn afgelopen. Beide bedrijven maakten vandaag bekend dat ze een overeenkomst hebben gesloten. Zowel Microsoft als TomTom beschuldigden elkaar van inbreuk op patenten. Ars Technica schrijft erover.

Navigation device-maker TomTom has settled its patent dispute with Microsoft, putting an end to the current round of litigation between the two companies. The terms of the settlement, which were announced by Microsoft on Monday, are said to be fully compliant with GNU’s General Public License (GPL).

De uitkomst is dat Microsoft niets hoeft te betalen aan TomTom, maar andersom zal TomTom wel een onbekend bedrag betalen aan Microsoft. Daarnaast zal het navigatiebedrijf het gebruik van de FAT-technologie (waarvan Microsoft patenten bezit) binnen twee jaar staken. Hierdoor kan TomTom gebruik blijven maken van Linux als besturingssysteem voor zijn navigatieapparaten zonder verder advocaten van Microsoft achter zich aan te krijgen. Ars Technica schrijft verder:

Although the settlement has ended the conflict between Microsoft and TomTom, questions still remain about the implications for FAT in the broader Linux ecosystem. Microsoft has previously stated that this lawsuit represents an isolated issue and that the company does not intend to broadly sue Linux users. Upstream kernel developers could potentially adopt TomTom’s code changes in order to avoid future patent disputes with Microsoft over FAT.

TomTom kiest bondgenoten in strijd rondom patenten

Microsoft is lid geworden van het Open Invention Network. Deze organisatie houdt zich bezig met intellectueel eigendomrechten. Het is opgericht om Linux te promoten. Leden zijn onder meer IBM, Novell, Sony en Red Hat. Dat TomTom nu lid wordt is geen toeval: het bedrijf heeft het aan de stok met Microsoft over Linux-patenten. ComputerWorld-blogger Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols schrijft:

Now, neither TomTom nor the OIN is saying they’ll use the OIN and friends’ patent resources against Microsoft. But, you’d have to be an idiot not to see that that is exactly what they’re implying will happen if Microsoft wants to keep pushing forward with its patent lawsuits. Even Microsoft has to think twice about taking on the entire open-source corporate alliance. A while back I predicted that any company that wanted to fight Linux and open source on patent grounds would find themselves, at best, facing a MAD (mutually assured destruction) patent war. Microsoft, by finally publicly pushing their patents against Linux, is just asking to be smacked around in court.

TomTom slaat terug

Dit kan nog gezellig worden: nadat Microsoft TomTom voor de rechter sleepte in verband met een dispuut over patenten, doet TomTom nu hetzelfde. Het geeft Microsoft een koekje van eigen deeg door een rechtszaak aan te spannen rondom patenten. Cnet schrijft erover:

The GPS device maker, based in The Netherlands, filed the countersuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia on Monday. TomTom says Microsoft’s Streets and Trips products infringe on four patents it owns related to vehicle navigation software.

Microsoft heeft inmiddels een reactie op zijn website geplaatst.

“We are reviewing TomTom’s filing, which we have just received. As has been the case for more than a year, we remain committed to a licensing solution, although we will continue to press ahead with the complaints we initiated in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington and the International Trade Commission.”

De rechtszaak tegen TomTom heeft met name in de open-sourcewereld nogal wat stof doen opwaaien. Velen beschouwen het als aanval op het gebruik van de FAT32-technologie in Linux-producten.

Ford toont uitgebreiding op SYNC-communicatiesysteem

Ford kondigt een uitbreiding aan op het SYNC-communicatie- en entertainmentsysteem. Het zal te vinden zijn in toekomstige auto’s van dit merk. Nieuw in het systeem is navigatie en verkeersinformatie. Het systeem biedt ook allerlei informatiediensten. In de laatste categorie valt onder meer het weerbericht, maar het is ook mogelijk om je tekstberichten te laten voorlezen. De mobiele telefoon maakt via Bluetooth contact. Voor de broodnodige ontspanning kun je je MP3-speler verbinden met SYNC. Het systeem wordt via gesproken opdrachten aangestuurd. Het systeem betaat al even, maar tijdens CES 2009 werd voor het eerst een versie met navigatie getoond. Alle Amerikaanse 2010-modellen van Ford zullen beschikken over SYNC. In Europa moeten we nog even wachten.

Starting in the summer 2009, the new service will be available on all 2010 model-year, SYNC-equipped Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models. Ford expects to sell one million cars embedding this technology this year alone. After the U.S. Ford SYNC will go global in 2010 starting in Europe, then migrates to Asia Pacific and Australia.
